Abstract
The authors surveyed 31 pediatric inpatients between the ages of 9 and 11 from 3 hospitals in Kwangju city (Chonnam University Hospital, Chosun University Hospital, Christian Hospital) and 38 children enrolled in elementary school of the same age as a control group in December, 1983. The purpose of this survey was to compare the body image in the two groups and to find the correlation between body image and self-concept and the factors affecting body image.
The inpatient group demonstrated less positive body image than did the normal children. The less positive the body image, the poorer the self-concept.
Girls reflected less positive body image than did boys. As the educational levels of parents¢¥ increased a more positive body image was found in the children. The children with more severe symptoms of diseases had a poorer body image.
